J Nems is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Punamu'kwati'jk, (Dartmouth, NS). They explore identity and belonging through collage, photography, and illustration.
J Nems holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography Studies. Their thesis work, Lost and Found, explored our emotional connection to objects and by documenting lost items, and raised questions of identity by dressing up and posing with these same items. Originally published as a book, this work was adapted as a featured exhibition for the 2018 Contact Photography Festival.
In their current artwork, J Nems instinctually builds colourful and abstract works that raise questions about physical bodies, places, and neurotypical ideas. J Nems dissects existing imagery and layers in new details, often leaving intentional gaps and irregular borders.
As a curious and avid learner, J Nems loves collaborating with others. They’ve worked with community groups and other artists to curate and support exhibitions like Nocturne: Art at Night, participate in regular group critiques, and have written accompanying essays for artist exhibitions.
